N/Assembly to decide on Electoral Bill January, says Gbajabiamila

The National Assembly will take a decision next month on the Electoral Act 2010 (Amendment) Bill, on which President Muhammadu has just declined to assent.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila stated this after reading the President's communication on the long-awaited bill to his colleagues at plenary on Tuesday.

The two chambers of the federal parliament proceed on their end-of-the-year recess immediately after passing the 2022 Appropriation Bill and the 2021 Finance Bill.

In the upper chamber, Senate President Ahmad Lawal had earlier called for a close-door session upon announcing the receipt of the President's communication about the Electoral bill.

The National Assembly passed the bill over 30 days ago and has the power to override the President's veto. But it will required a two-thirds majority to do that.

The President is not in agreement with the parliament on the mode of party primary. While the National Assembly voted for direct primary, the President argued that the parties should be allowed to choose the options they find suitable.

Nigeria's major political parties have depended more on indirect primary, which is believed to be susceptible to the forces of the leaders of the party, particularly at the federal and state levels who have influence on delegates to the primary.
