Nigeria experiences rise in Covid cases

Nigeria's Covid-19 situation is troubling. But the citizens are not so bothered.

Figures from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) put the daily tally for Saturday, 18th December 2021 at 828, which is the fourth highest daily count in exactly 11 months.

The three days prior to Saturday's figure recorded outrageous counts - 1,584 on Friday, 1,411 on Wednesday and 1,051 on Thursday.

In all, Nigeria has 223,483 positive cases going back to 27th February 2020 when the index case was recorded.

Of this number, 211,522 cases had been discharged, 8,977 remain active, while 2,984 casualties have been recorded.

Lagos tops the table of infection with 83,514 cases, while the other states in the Top 10 are: FCT (24,777), Rivers (13,637), Kaduna (10,232), Plateau (10,061), Oyo (9,120), Edo (6,960), Ogun (5,517), Ondo (4,676) and Delta (4,543).

Kogi State has the least number of cases (five), the last of which was reported on 3rd July, last year. The state government insists its people are immune from Covid-19 and has refused to cooperate with the NCDC in testing and other protocols.

There is Covid vaccine hesitancy in Nigeria.
