Ibadan awaits new King
Ibadan will soon have another traditional ruler. And it expected to be Senator (Dr) Lekan Balogun, the Otun Balogun of Ibadanland.
Officially the third most populated city in Nigeria after Lagos and Kano, Ibadan kingship is hierarchical and rotational.
The successor to Oba Adetunji, who was the Balogun of Ibadan prior to becoming Olubadan, is to be produced by the civil lineage, the Egbe Agba (well known as Otun Balogun). The Balogun is the military wing of the Ibadan royal institution.
One of the highlights of Oba Adetunji's reign was his tug of war with the then Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi (now late) a few months after his ascension to the stool.
Ajimobi crowned 21 High Chiefs in Ibadanland to whittle the powers of the Olubadan, who described the move as an "exercise in futility".
The Olubadan eventually won the protracted battle.
Oba Adetunji was 93 last 26th August.
To become the Olubadan, descendants of the two lineages - Balogun and Otun Balogun - have 21 traditional title steps to ascend.
Oba Adetunji, for instance, was in the queue for 39 years until his turn came in 2017.
In choosing a successor to the Olubadan, the recognised kingmakers of the Olubadan Chieftaincy (also known as the Olubadan-in-Council) will meet in accordance with the Chieftaincy Declaration.
