The genie is finally out of the bottle!

After meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in his office this afternoon, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu broke the news that has been on political pundits' lips for months: he will join the 2023 Presidential race.

“I have informed the President of my ambition but I have not informed Nigerians yet, I am still consulting,” the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) told State House media.

His spokesman, Tunde Rahman confirmed the words of his boss, and assured that a full statement would follow later.

Since concluding his two-term tenure as Governor of Lagos State in 2007, Tinubu has remained relevant in Nigeria politics. He has delivered the governorship of the state since then and also spread his tentacles to other states, particularly in Nigeria's southwest region.

In 2013, he teamed up with liked minds to form APC and led the support base that produced Buhari as the party's candidate and eventually Nigeria's President.

By his own admission, Tinubu would have been Buhari's running mate for the 2015 poll, but he yielded that offer from the candidate to Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who was his Commissioner for Justice as Lagos State Governor.

Tinubu's announcement will undoubtedly shake things up among other aspirants speculated to be gearing up for the party ticket. They include Osinbajo, Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi and African Development Bank President, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina.
